Tips for Getting Free Publicity
I met with Gary Frisch, of Swordfish Communications to discuss public relations, and learn more about ways to get publicity for your business.
Some tips to remember:
1. Due Diligence. Before you pitch an editor about your story idea, whether it’s a newspaper, magazine, radio or tv program, do your homework. Read the writer’s column, or listen to their show. Find out what topics they cover. If they cover health topics, don’t pitch them about your new fundraising efforts. Make sure you’re a match.
2. Think like a reader – would your topic be of interest to their readers/viewers/listeners? Answer honestly before pitching.
3. Get involved. Get your company involved in your community. A story about giving back locally is usually a topic of interest to local publications.
4. Free Tip. There’s an online service called “HARO – Help A Reporter Out” – that can help you get free publicity. Here’s how it works: reporters post who they are looking to interview – if you match the criteria, and can get back to them quickly – you could be included in their story – for print, online, tv, cable or radio .
